The Yacht Racing Academy (YRA) had a very successful Cowes week – The main aim for the YRA crew onboard Chernikeeff 2 was to be competitive against the new TP52’s and to beat the RYA’s keelboat squad sailing the TP52 John Merricks 2. Both of these aims were achieved by the end of the week which saw some very windy testing conditions for all the yachts in class zero. Chernikeeff 2 was consistently ahead of the RYA keelboat squad sailing John Merricks 2 throughout the week and also had some great moments beating the other TP52’s to the 1st mark on a couple of occasions and staying ahead of the Tp52’s on the water for long periods of the racing. Cowes week 2008 really emphasized and demonstrated the work and development the YRA sailors have undergone throughout 2008. To be competitive and making a good fight of it against some of the most modern and best funded TP52’s out there in a boat that is now 7 years old is a real triumph and something everyone involved in the project is very proud of. We will just quickly add that although C2 is 7 yrs old she is still a great boat and seriously exciting in 25knts of wind!!!
In addition to the success the crew on Chernikeeff 2 obtained the YRA sailors sailing 1 of the academy’s J80’s sponsored by “fight against malaria” finished 2nd overall and the skipper Seb Rippard won the trophy for best young skipper at Cowes week 2008.
