Shirley Inspires Young Mums at UKSA

Double Olympic gold medallist, Shirley Robertson, will be at the academy on Thursday 25th September for a day sailing, in support of a project funded by Liz Earle Cosmetics to build confidence and self-esteem of young single mums on the Island.

Liz Earle has donated £10,000 of funding to UKSA for the project, giving six young women from a local Island support group the opportunity for personal development and the fun, positive and challenging experience of a ten day sailing and watersports training programme, including two days of teambuilding activities.

Shirley Robertson, who is a UKSA ambassador, will meet the young women during their time at UKSA, giving a short presentation and then joining the group for the rest of the day out on the water.

We hope that this project is the beginning of a long-term relationship between UKSA and Liz Earle, to support disadvantaged young people on the Island through personal development and allowing them to feel the confidence and self belief to make their own decisions for a positive future.

UKSA Cadets Awarded Funding at LINCS Launch

Congratulations to Jamie Cook, James Knill and Aiden Gerry, three of UKSA's Yachting Cadetship students who were presented with funding from Trinity House at the official launch of the Leisure Industry Nautical Cadet Scheme (LINCS) at the PSP Southampton Boat Show on Friday.

Dame Ellen MacArthur and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston presented the awards that will provide them with 90% of their tuition fees paid and a monthly allowance whilst completing the three year training programme.

The LINCS scheme was developed for the charity arm of Trinity House, with the aim of funding young people to enable them to gain the qualifications and experience required for a long and successful career in the now booming Superyacht industry. Trinity House partnered with UKSA to ensure that the future of the industry will continue to grow with fully qualified, professional crew.

Following an evaluation into the success of the scheme, Trinity House aim to consider broadening the range of beneficiaries; working with UKSA to open the opportunities to more young people in the future.

So, we wish all the success to Jamie, James and Aiden for their training and future careers, and look forward to welcoming more bursary funding for our students in the future!
